The American Academy of Dermatology is seeking a Staff Writer, Dermatology World located in our Rosemont, IL. office responsible for researching and writing feature articles on topics as assigned, and Academy-based news for Dermatology World, aad.org/dw, DW Weekly, and the AAD Impact Report. Interview and interact with Academy staff, leadership, members, and others to develop practice management and member-centric columns for print and online DermWorld. Assist Senior Manager in developing outlines and story ideas for freelance writers of features and columns and editing freelance writer editorial contributions. Contribute weekly content for DW Academy Insider. Ensure that all content is thoroughly proofread and quality tested according to AAD standards and guidelines.

Responsibilities:
-
Write feature articles (12 per year) for DermWorld print, and develop Answers in Practice (6), Asked & Answered (12), Impact Report (12), Academy Update (12), Donor Spotlight (as needed), and Facts At Your Fingertips (12) columns. Interview and interact with Academy staff, leadership, members, and others to generate material, develop news and feature articles, and obtain source quotes on socioeconomic issues, state and federal regulatory affairs, and Academy-based news.

Assist Senior Manager in managing freelance/contributing writers for Answers in Practice and Legally Speaking columns.

Assist Senior Manager with developing feature outlines and managing freelance writers.

Assist in proofreading page proofs of Dermatology World and quality assurance of publication webpages on a monthly basis as assigned.

Provide suggestions for news and feature articles for Dermatology World and other Academy publications. Attend Dermatology World editorial team meetings to develop and discuss articles.

Attend and report on AAD annual and summer meetings to provide news coverage of sessions and appropriate socioeconomic committees and to gather background information for Dermatology World and other publications as assigned. Report on Academy planning meetings and other events as assigned and attend when appropriate.

Provide editorial assistance to Academy staff on other publications and projects, as assigned. Assist with the planning and completion of text for these publications.
Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field required.

Minimum two years’ demonstrated experience in news reporting, writing, and interviewing. Strong editing and writing skills are essential.

Association/health care experience desired; medical writing experience helpful.

Must have thorough knowledge of Associated Press style.

Multimedia and web design experience a plus.
