NWA Media is looking for an experienced journalist/editor to oversee weekly newspaper in McDonald County, Mo. The right candidate values community journalism and is ready to be part of the Northwest Arkansas/southern Missouri area. The best candidates will have experience writing for websites, reader engagement and social media.
The editor is mostly a one-person show responsible for the quality of the content that fills the news hole, including writing, photography and editing of news, features and McDonald County High School sports. The editor is not responsible for page design. She maintains general records of correspondence and other information and performs other duties as assigned.
The candidate possesses a strong foundation in reporting, editing, and project management, with extensive experience in presentations across various platforms. Their knowledge of news elements is comprehensive, encompassing key factors such as proximity, timeliness, consequence, novelty, conflict, sensationalism, human interest, prominence, suspense, clarity, and certainty. Additionally, they have a solid understanding of the English language, including grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation.
The individual is well-versed in the editorial guidelines, policies, and procedures relevant to the field and have a working knowledge of the legal aspects of libel, including potential defenses. Their communication skills, both written and oral, are effective for internal communications and public dissemination. The candidate shows the ability to interpret and apply WEHCO Media's policies and procedures and is accustomed to working long hours, often under pressure, to ensure tasks are completed on time.
To meet the minimum qualifications, the candidate holds a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, or a related liberal arts discipline, which may be complemented by pertinent experience. They have a minimum of one year of experience in a professional news role at either a weekly or daily newspaper.
