Position Summary:
Responsible for verifying and updating content to ensure the highest standards of accuracy. This role meticulously cross-references statements in editorial copy with information in approved backup materials, ensuring every article aligns with Coffey’s established accuracy guidelines. Supports editors and writers by conducting comprehensive research for articles and special projects utilizing Coffey’s internal resources, reputable online databases, and external libraries. Upholds Coffey’s reputation for editorial excellence and credibility, exercising sound judgment to determine the relevance, reliability, and appropriateness of all sourced material.
Fact-Checker Essential Job Functions:
- Fact checks content to ensure that all statements are supported by the backup. Ensures that only approved sources are used and that those sources are included in the backup file with a working link.
- Reviews and maintains all Coffey content, including the Digital Health Library and all print libraries.
- Works with freelance fact checkers, researchers and story reviewers to ensure their work meets Coffey standards.
- Maintains Coffey’s approved source list and proactively recommends additions or removals to the editorial team.
- Assists with the fulfillment of client content requests by updating existing content or compiling backup for a new story.
- Assists editors and writers by gathering packets of background information from approved sources for use in writing Coffey and custom articles.
- Obtains additional information as needed to verify facts during the production process.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of research, fact checking and quality assurance methods.
- Repurposes expired library content by finding current backup to support the story or making changes to the story to reflect current research.
Other Responsibilities:
- Collaborates closely with editors to resolve factual errors and fact-checking questions, providing additional assistance as needed.
- Duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either orally or in writing.
Experience and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism or communication (with print emphasis), or equivalent experience. Experience in the sciences, especially medical, health and biology fields.
- Meticulous attention to detail and the skills to detect factual errors and the ability to explain and correct them.
- Excellent analytical and research skills.
- Advanced communication skills.
- Persistent, resourceful and professionally courteous in obtaining information from leading authorities in medicine or other fields.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in selecting information and determining value of information relative to editors' and writers’ research needs.
- Ability to distinguish in written material between well established scientific facts and unresolved scientific questions; and between recognized medical authorities and primary sources from secondary sources.
