Job Overview
The Managing Editor is a new position at WAMC. Working under the News Director and closely with the Assistant News Director, the Managing Editor will oversee daily news production and longer-term News Department projects, helping to manage a dozen news staffers and additional freelancers, editing stories and web content, working with other departments to ensure public quality control, and serving as an on-air presence when required.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Uphold and demand excellence in WAMC’s regional news products
- Uphold WAMC’s standards and ethics
- Work closely with other newsroom leaders to ensure a shared vision for deploying journalistic resources
- Run the daily news meeting and schedule daybooks
- Correspond with reporters by phone and email throughout the day to adapt to changing needs
- React quickly to changing news narratives and breaking stories across a large coverage area
- Work with reporters and producers to execute three daily live news magazines, special coverage, and hourly newscasts, and other projects
- Work to develop new media products such as podcasts, newsletters, and live events
- Serve as a voice of authority in working with staff reporters, press officers, news partners within the New York Public News Network and beyond, and within the company
- Keep WAMC’s digital products accurate and up to date with regular attention
- A flexible schedule including some nights, weekends and holidays is required
Qualifications
- The Managing Editor should have a strong news background, supervisory experience, a strong reporting portfolio, and excellent news knowledge
- The Managing Editor must maintain excellent organization while also being able to adapt to changing needs and circumstances rapidly
- Audio editing experience is a must
- Excellent proofreading and copyediting skills are a must
- The Managing Editor should be fluent in the news of the coverage area and the public media system
